This course is not about learning to use tools or just training in a programming language; instead the emphasis is on computational thinking. Computational thinking is a kind of reasoning used by both humans and machines. Thinking computationally is an important life skill. Thinking this way means using both abstraction and decomposition. Programming can be frustrating and students will need attention to detail, they must be logical in thinking. With these challenges comes rewards and a real sense of achievement. Units studied in Y12 include: Computer systems; The characteristics of contemporary processors, input, output and storage devices. Data types, data storage and algorithms. Legal, moral and cultural issues. Computational thinking, problem solving and programming. Units studied in Y13 build on Y12 knowledge and include: Computer systems; software and software development, exchanging data. Algorithms and programming Students also complete a programming project. They will choose a computing problem to work through following guidance from the specification. Analyse a problem, design & develop the solution and evaluate this.

What you need to get on

5 grade 4’s minimum, including grade 6 in Maths.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
