What is the course about? Chemistry is the study of the elements and their compounds. Since it is a science subject, practical work is an important part of the course. Topics covered in this course include: ­ The structure of the atom and the importance of atomic masses, formulae and equations. Chemical bonding and structure and trends in the Periodic Table. ­ The chemical ideas that underpin organic chemistry. ­ Energy changes and rates of chemical reactions.What kind of students is this course suitable for? Chemistry is a course that is suitable for any academically able student who is interested in this subject. Other subjects that would go well with Chemistry are Biology, Physics and Mathematics. Chemistry can also prove to be a useful support subject if you are studying Geography or Psychology. A chemical qualification opens the door wide to a huge range of science careers. However, it is also a stimulating and interesting course for any students who enjoyed science at GCSE, even if they do not wish to enter a scientific career.
