What the college says
A Level Biology builds upon the work that students have done at GCSE, but aims to broaden and deepen students' knowledge and understanding. New developments and technologies are studied and biological theory is placed in the context of every day life. Students complete six units over the two years: Module 1: Development of practical skills. This module covers the practical skills that students should develop throughout the course. These practical skills can be assessed within the written examinations and within the Practical Endorsement. Module 2: Foundations in Biology. The module covers the concepts required throughout the remaining modules, such as cell structure, biological molecules, cell division and cellular organisation. Module 3: Exchange and Transport. Students study exchange surfaces, transport in animals and transport in plants. Module 4: Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease. Students will look at communicable diseases, disease prevention and the immune system, biodiversity and classification and evolution. Module 5: Communications, homeostasis and energy. Students will study neuronal and hormonal communication, plant and animal responses. as well as photosynthesis and respiration. Module 6: Genetics, evolution and ecosystems. Students will study patterns of inheritance, cloning and biotechnology, and ecosystems.
What you need to get on
Grade 6/6 in Combined Science or grade 6 in GCSE Biology. Biology has a mathematical component and a grade 5 in Mathematics is advisable.

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
