What the college says
In A Level Biology, students will develop practical skills by planning experiments, collecting data, analysing experimental results and making conclusions. The specification covers all of the core areas of Biology and allows exploration of the fundamental concepts through a range of practical, group and individual tasks. The course incorporates the biochemistry and structure which are fundamental to the functioning of living organisms. Topics include: • biodiversity • structure and function of biological compounds and enzymes • basic cell structure and organisation • cell division, cell membranes, and membrane transport • communication, homeostasis and energy • genetics, evolution and ecosystems. The programme of study ensures there is an appropriate balance between Plant Biology, Animal Biology and Microbiology and includes an appreciation of the relevance of sustainability to all aspects of scientific developments. All living organisms interact with each other and with the non-living world. The living world can be studied at population, organism, cell and molecular levels. There are fundamental similarities as well as differences between plants, animals and microorganisms.
