Advanced Level Biology is a challenging and rewarding course which incorporates and builds on previous biological knowledge. Topics covered include: The structure and function of biomolecules, structure and role of DNA and RNA, cell structure and division, classification and biodiversity and exchange and transport mechanisms. Cellular respiration, photosynthesis, microbiology and pathogens, DNA profiling, sequencing and gene technology, origins of genetic variation, control systems and Ecosystems . Students are also required to complete 8 core practicals in year 12 and 8 in year 13. The assessment of practical skills is a compulsory requirement of the course of study for A level biology. It will appear on all students’ certificates as a separately reported result, alongside the overall grade for the qualification.

What you need to get on

Minimum of grade 8 in Biology or 8 in Combined Science - students must achieve a minimum of a Grade 8 in the Biology units if they took Combined Science. In addition we require a minimum grade 5 in Maths and English.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
