What the college says

This is an intensive one year course which covers the GCSE AQA specification. This is suitable for students who need an interesting and academic course that sits alongside the other courses they will be studying as part of the Access to Level Three year. This course has most similarity with the study of History and Politics. It is appropriate for students who are interested in modern society and who enjoy conveying their ideas in writing. Sociologists produce theories to explain human behaviour (functionalism, Marxism, feminism, etc.) and students must be prepared to study these theories and the related research in detail. There is a great deal of reading and essay based assessment; students must be able to interpret essay titles and produce coherent, fluent essays. It is essential that they develop analytical and evaluative skills in relation to both empirical and theoretical data.

What you need to get on

For our Access to Level 3 programme, students will need to have a minimum of four grade 3s at GCSE including a minimum of grade 3 in English Language and Maths.

How you are assessed

Entry level and Level 1 study, English and maths retakes, and supported programmes.

What this level means

The GCSE-equivalent step, and the usual route into Level 3.
