What the college says

Religious Studies is about explaining, interpreting and comparing religious traditions and beliefs. It is an exciting course which challenges you to engage with, and respond to, a broad range of profound questions affecting all aspects of life. The Religious Studies Department has high expectations and high success rates; we will encourage and support you to achieve an excellent grade and, at the same time, to explore your own beliefs, values and ideas. The Religious Studies course includes three strands of study. Firstly, you will conduct a systematic study of one religion, focusing on its beliefs, values and practices, as well as examining the relationship between religion and society. You will also examine philosophical issues and questions raised by religion and belief, studying a range of arguments for, and against, the existence of God. Finally, you will explore a range of ethical issues and evaluate theories which attempt to resolve them, at the same time considering how the study of ethics has been influenced by religion. The course aims to promote an enquiring, critical and sympathetic approach to the study of religion and related issues. You will find it personally enriching and develop a number of skills during the course.
