Physics is an extremely powerful 'A' level and degree to have studied. Widely valued beyond the world of science, it is a gateway subject which can lead into the world of finance and the law as well as the more obvious careers in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. The lower sixth course covers fundamental particles, quantum phenomena, electricity, waves, mechanics and materials. In the upper sixth this is carried further but the course also includes fields, thermodynamics and an optional topic of either medical physics, turning points in physics, astrophysics or applied physics. Student quote: "A level physics has given me the opportunity to study how the Universe works on all scales. The challenges provided have given me the confidence to solve a variety of problems in the real world."

What you need to get on

At least Grade 6 in GCSE Physics or Grade 66 in GCSE Combined Science, Grade 5 in GCSE English Language or GCSE English Literature and Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
