Studying Philosophy and Ethics in the Sixth Form involves asking big questions of yourself, the people around you and the world in which you live. It will challenge the way you think about life, death, the way people behave and how we know what we think we know to be true. The topics studied in A Level Philosophy include the traditional arguments for and against the existence of God. You will consider whether God can be experienced, and if so, what the purpose of the experience is. For the Ethics component, you will study the theories of major ethical thinkers and apply them to practical topics such as the nature and value of human life, abortion and euthanasia. You will also consider the similarities and differences between humans and animals. In the second component of the course you will consider religious contemporary issues such as religious pluralism, gender and sexuality and the relationship between religion and science.

What you need to get on

Students should achieve a grade 5 in English Language at GCSE or Grade 5 in Full Course RE at GCSE.

How you are assessed

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
