A Level Music
at King Edward Vi School, Lichfield · school or sixth form
What the college says
The GCE Music course is intended to allow students to pursue musical interests and develop a breadth of understanding over a wide range of styles and genres. It provides an excellent basis for lifelong learning and for higher education courses in music. At A level, students experience all three main musical disciplines of performing, composing, and listening and understanding.
What you need to get on
A Grade 5 or higher at GCSE Music (or equivalent) is advisable. However, with excellent performing skills, it may still be possible to undertake the course without a Grade 5 at GCSE. It is desirable to have at least Grade 5 Theory (ABRSM) and if you do not have that level, we would ask you to work towards making your theory knowledge secure before starting the course. On your main instrument you should be at least Grade 5 standard (or equivalent).
How you are assessed
Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
