What the college says

Students will study four core modules and two applied modules. The four core modules are compulsory and at the beginning of your course you will need to choose whether to take Decision, Mechanics or Statistics as your application of Mathematics. During the first year you will take Core 1, Core 2 and either Mechanics 1, Statistics 1 or Decision 1. Core Mathematics - These modules extend work undertaken at GCSE on algebra, graphs and trigonometry and introduce new topics including calculus, series and numerical methods. Mechanics - This involves constructing mathematical models to solve problems involving velocity, acceleration, forces, pulleys, moments, collisions and centres of mass. Statistics - This extends the work you did in the data handling part of your GCSE course. The course looks at mathematical modelling in statistics and probability. You will cover probability, discrete distributions, the normal distribution and correlation. Decision - This is unlike the Maths you will have done at school. It largely involves using algorithms to methodically solve a variety of real life problems such as finding the quickest route through a network or maximising profits for a company. During the second year you will take Core 3, Core 4 and another applied unit.
