What the college says

The course is divided into three components: Physical Geography; Human Geography and a Geographical Investigation. Physical Geography This section is designed to focus on the world's great landscapes, and the natural systems that operate. These are major elements in the natural environment and understanding them is fundamental to many aspects of world geography. The content invites students to contemplate the magnitude and significance of the physical environment at a variety of scales, their relevance to wider geography and their central importance for human populations. Topics studied include: water & carbon cycles; coastal systems; hazards; ecosystems under stress & cold environments. Human Geography Increased interdependence and transformed relationships between peoples, states and environments have prompted attempts at a global level to manage and govern some aspects of human affairs - some more successful than others! Students engage with important dimensions of these phenomena with particular emphasis on international trade and access to markets; and the areas which no nation exerts sovereignty over such as the deep seabed and Antarctica. Topics studied include: Global systems and governance; changing places; contemporary urban environments; population and the environment; resource security. Throughout both sections students contemplate many complex dimensions of contemporary world affairs and their own place in and perspective on them. Study in both of these sections
