By studying English Literature, you will learn the vital skills of close textual analysis and literary criticism. You will compare and contrast a range of exciting, challenging, and stimulating works from 1610-2021, while considering the historical and cultural contexts. If you have a love of reading and enjoy the idea of analysing and comparing literary texts, then this is the course for you. At Truro College, you will be encouraged to explore a wide variety of texts such as the ever-relevant genre of dystopia, the subversive poetry of Christina Rossetti, Ibsens ground-breaking drama, A Dolls House and Shakespeares dynamic play, The Tempest. During your course, you will write two pieces of coursework. You will have a large degree of independence in your choice of texts and tasks (with guidance from your teacher).

What you need to get on

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including a minimum of grade 6 or above in English Literature and a minimum of grade 5 or above in English Language. You must also enjoy reading. An interest in analysis and studying texts in their historical context is essential. You also need to be highly motivated and capable of carrying out independent research and wider reading.

Academic subjects, mostly exams, three or four at once. The traditional route to university.
